Beta blocker medication for some sufferers of hypertension is quite effective, but less effective or undesirable for others. To put it simply, beta blockers block epinephrine (adrenaline), and slow the heart down. They also relax the blood vessels, and as a result, have become a desirable medication for those who do a lot of exercise and/or have a high level of stress.
Beta blockers were actually used and developed for the East German winter Olympic team biathletes. They would be used to slow the heart down so that the biathletes could transition from skiing to marksmanship with minimal effects on their ability to steady themselves.
My own doctor told me that Beta blockers aren't desirable for younger patients, because of the high likelihood of side effects, including fatigue, cold hands, dizziness, and trouble sleeping.
If you're on a different class of hypertension medication, and they're not working for you, beta blockers may be for you, especially if you exercise a lot. But, as with any other medication, it depends on the individual.
